Xtreme Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who are Xtreme?

Xtreme Information is the market leader in the provision of competitive advertising and editorial monitoring intelligence from around the world. Launched in 1983 as The TV Register, Xtreme's Ads Division captures and archives over 25,000 new press and TV advertisements every month from over 50 countries, as well as radio, outdoor and internet. They work with the majority of FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 multinational companies and with every major advertising and media agency.

For more information visit their website: http://www.xtremeinformation.com/index.asp

  • How is the data captured?

Xtreme have a team of specialist Press Monitors which locates all instances of relevant advertising, covering all the major product categories, and logs these onto a proprietary database. Every new piece of creative advertising is logged, along with every subsequent appearance of that ad. The Monitoring Team identifies new, unique creative executions by querying the database for headline, key text and description information.

A headline and description are logged for each new ad, along with key words. Details such as page number, size, position, colour and cost are logged for each appearance of an ad.

Advert position is logged on a "virtual newspaper" grid, which makes it possible to show where on the page an ad appeared.

After monitoring, new pieces of creative are scanned at a resolution of 150 dpi (dots per inch) and are enhanced using a Photoshop process. The images are stored against the ad meta-data, providing linked creative and advertising expenditure.

  • How is the expenditure calculated?

Advertisement cost is calculated at ratecard prices. Xtreme sources ratecards directly from the newspaper publishers, and updates these on a regular basis. All major page loadings are taken into account, e.g. first page, right hand page, special sections etc. Prices are reported gross and no discounts are applied.

  • When is the data updated?

The monthly data is released onto the NMA website 12 working days after the end of month.

  • Why is there only one advert shown for each advertiser?

The NMA has chosen to show only one example of each advertiser creative execution as part of this database. Xtreme logs every new individual creative and this is available to subscribers of the Xtreme Information service.

  • Which titles are included in this data?
